Many Singaporeans know Raffles as the "Founding Father of Singapore" but are not familiar with his life story, why he chose Singapore or what he had done before he landed here. This talk will focus on his experiences, accomplishments and career in Java and the Malay region. The speaker will also touch on the close relationship between Singapore and the Malay Archipelago before 1819. This talk is held in conjunction with the Asian Civilisations Museum special exhibition "Raffles in Southeast Asia: Revisiting the Scholar and Statesman".
许多新加坡人对莱佛士的生平并不熟悉，只知道他近乎神化的“新加坡之父”形象。他们不清楚莱佛士为何选择新加坡或他登陆新加坡之前的历史。这场讲座将讲述莱佛士在爪哇岛和马来区的经历、成就以及他职业生涯中富争议性的事件。从中，我们得以一窥1819年之前，新加坡岛与马来群岛其他地区的紧密联系。本次演讲配合新加坡亚洲文明博物馆举办的“莱佛士在东南亚：重新审视其学者与政治家角色” 特展。
