Extensive transnational networks flourish across the Chinese communities in Fujian, China, and overseas Chinese communities spanning various regions across Southeast Asia, with temples serving as their focal points. By interpreting existing religious inscriptions, it is possible to engage in an in-depth study of how such transnational temple networks were established and examine the modes of interaction and communication between overseas Chinese and their ancestral homelands.

 

Speaker biography:

 

Professor Zheng Zhenman

 

Xiamen University

 

Distinguished Professor at the School of History and Cultural Heritage and the Director of the Division of Humanities and Arts at Xiamen University. His significant works include Family Lineage Organization and Social Change in Ming and Qing Fujian, Community Lineage and the State: Traditional Society of Fujian and Taiwan from Multiple Perspectives, Epigraphical Materials on the History of Religion in Fujian (co-authored with Professor Kenneth Dean), and Contract Documents of Fujian Civil Society.
